A little about me
Hey, again. It’s me, Amrita. I’m a graduate of Northwestern University and now a law student at the University of Chicago.
Art has the power to communicate where words fail us. To me, it’s like putting a little bit of your soul on paper for the world to see. It’s an act that is both incredibly bold and at the same time, incredibly vulnerable.
I started my artistic journey when I was 13. My grandfather, who currently resides in India, introduced me to scratchboard. For those of you who are unfamiliar with scratchboard, it’s a medium with a base of white China clay with a coating of black India ink. When the black surface is scratched, the underlying white is exposed. Color can be added in the later stages.
I am currently the youngest Signature Member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA). It has been an awesome experience to connect and learn from the pioneers and innovators of the scratchboard medium. When I was in highschool, I had the honor of having my scratchboard hung in the Capitol Building in Washington DC when I placed first in my district’s Congressional Art Competition. I also recently placed in Artist Magazine's annual art competition. I’m going to stopping bragging now, but if you’re interested in some of my achievements and coverage, go to the ‘Press’ page.
I’m on a quest to both redefine myself as an artist and find my personal style. While I’m still an avid scratchboarder, I’m experimenting a lot now with pen and ink and oil paints. After scratching for so long, trying new mediums is both difficult and yet oddly liberating. I’m trying to break down the creative barriers I have put up for myself and let my voice flow into my line. You’ll find some of these explorations under the ‘Illustrations’ page.
Anyway, thanks for hearing me out. If you have any questions, comments, or just want to say hi, fill out the form on the 'Buy' page and connect with me on social media and I’ll get back to you soon!
